Heat treating, as the name implies, is a series of thermal treatments used to alter the properties of an alloy. Heat treatments are used for a variety of purposes, the most important being to control the mechanical properties, especially hardness, ductility, strength, toughness, and internal stresses. Carley Foundry utilizes seven solution drop bottom ovens to solution heat treat and then four additional ovens to artificially age. Operating temperatures within our ovens range from 650 to 1150F for our solution ovens and 250 to 650F for our age ovens.
Our heat treat operation is monitored extensively to meet both NADCAP and ISO requirements. Our ovens are maintained through a thorough regular Preventative Maintenance procedure and calibration process. Controllers for the ovens are calibrated monthly and control thermocouples checked weekly, as well as each oven going through a day-long survey procedure monthly – all per AMS 2750E specifications. This is all done to ensure that all product is within a +/- 10F degree window for the desired time with most solution ovens performing to a +/- 5F range.
